1976-2026 Pordenone ricorda

A photographic exhibition, lectures, and meetings will be held to commemorate the earthquake that occurred 50 years ago, focusing on the city of Pordenone and the entire province.

Fifty years after the earthquake that struck much of our region on May 6, 1976, with its epicenter in Friuli, Propordenone has staged a photography exhibition that focuses on the city and province of Pordenone.

The aim is to preserve and transmit the memory of one of the most dramatic events in recent Italian history.

The images collected in the exhibition tell the story of the earthquake's aftermath in Pordenone and its province, documenting not only the devastation and pain, but above all the strength, dignity, and extraordinary capacity for rebirth of our communities.

Through photographs, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through time: from the rubble of the early days, to the scarred but determined faces of the survivors, to the reconstruction phases, and the extensive recovery of artworks that have restored life and identity to the affected areas.

The exhibition is not just a collection of photographs, but a historical and human document. Each image represents a story, a fragment of collective memory that continues to speak to new generations.

To remember means to understand, and to understand also means to recognize the value of solidarity and resilience that emerged forcefully in those days.

If that event is remembered today in a positive light, it's because of the response that followed. The reconstruction in Friuli is often cited as a virtuous example: strong involvement of local communities, administrative transparency, and a focus on rebuilding "where and how it was" but with modern criteria. It was a less centralized response than other Italian disasters, and more rooted in the local communities.

Commemorating today does not simply mean remembering a dramatic event, but also questioning the future, lest we risk transforming a historical lesson into a mere celebration.

The initiative will produce a special issue of the magazine "La Loggia" dedicated to the event. Four conferences on earthquake-related topics are planned during the month of the exhibition, which we will feature extensively in the coming days.

The project was made possible thanks to the patronage and photographic material of the Municipality of Pordenone, Confartigianato and the Missinato fund, the CRAF of Spilimbergo, the Bersaglieri association, the Gazzettino and the Messaggeto Veneto.
