October promises to be a busy and engaging month for the Pordenone Civic Museums, which are offering a programme of events designed to satisfy the curiosity of visitors of all ages and interests. From the charm of the Early Middle Ages to the natural wonders of the Adriatic, via the masterpieces of nineteenth-century portraiture and the unmissable National Family Day at the Museum, the city’s cultural offering is varied and accessible.
The programme begins on Sunday 5 October at 3.30 pm at the Archaeological Museum of Torre with ‘The Lombards in the North-East’, a guided tour that promises to reveal the many facets of this people: fearsome warriors, skilled craftsmen and migrants in search of new lands. Through unique artefacts and anecdotes recounted by an expert guide, participants will be able to retrace the indelible traces left by the Lombards in the Friuli region and understand how this Early Medieval people helped shape the cultural identity of our north-east.
Sunday 12 October marks a special occasion: once again this year, the Civic Museums are taking part in F@MU, the National Day for Families at the Museum. The initiative, which will involve the Art Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Western Friuli and the ‘Silvia Zenari’ Natural History Museum, will transform the museum spaces into vibrant places full of colour, voices and shared discoveries. In collaboration with Società Mondo Delfino, families will be able to enjoy an experience designed to foster dialogue between different generations through fun and educational workshops tailored for families.
On Sunday 19 October at 3.30 pm, the Art Museum – Palazzo Ricchieri opens its doors to ‘Il Ritrattista Grigoletti’, a guided tour dedicated to Michelangelo Grigoletti, one of the most celebrated portraitists of the 19th century. The artist from Pordenone, who was also a highly regarded teacher at the Venice School of Art, comes to life through his works and the hidden details that only a keen eye can spot. The tour promises to reveal little-known facts and secrets hidden within the master’s paintings.
On Sunday 19 October at 5.00 pm, the Natural History Museum will host a talk with biospeleologist and environmental communicator Valentina Balestra as part of an interesting ‘Afternoon with the Researcher’ event, which will explore the topic of microplastics in cave environments. Free admission.
The monthly programme concludes on Sunday 26 October with ‘In and Out of the Water’, a themed tour of the exhibition at the Silvia Zenari Natural History Museum. Through photographs and museum exhibits, visitors will be able to immerse themselves metaphorically in the waters of the northern Adriatic, discovering the organisms that inhabit it and the extraordinary adaptation strategies they have developed to survive environmental challenges, from the ceaseless movement of the waves to the pressures of contemporary climate change.
