Making the Palazzo del Fumetto in Pordenone more accessible and user-friendly, so that everyone can enjoy a visit: this is the aim behind the innovative museum app developed in partnership with Willeasy s.r.l., a Friuli-based company specialising in accessibility, in collaboration with technology partner ATMedia srl.
The new app will be unveiled in the auditorium of the Palazzo del Fumetto on Wednesday 24 June at 6.00 pm. The project aims to make the museum in Pordenone a national centre of excellence for the inclusive provision and enjoyment of cultural content by 2027.
The initiative not only ensures a better visitor experience, but also introduces new digital tools and develops services designed to meet the diverse needs of the public.
When the project was launched, the Palazzo del Fumetto offered good accessibility to its spaces, but lacked digital tools designed for visitors and specific content for people with mobility, sensory or cognitive disabilities. The activities carried out in the first year laid the foundations for tangible and lasting change. The collaboration between the Palazzo del Fumetto and Willeasy represents a significant investment for the local area and for the world of culture. The aim is to develop an innovative and replicable model, capable of demonstrating how inclusion, technology and the promotion of cultural heritage can grow hand in hand.
App features
The new app, which is free for smartphones and tablets, is available for iOS and Android devices and guides visitors through the exhibition, offering accessible content in Italian and English for the museum’s 20 sections and, shortly, for up to 10 sections dedicated to the Palazzo del Fumetto’s temporary exhibitions. For each section, in both Italian and English, the following are provided: a professional audio guide (up to 120 seconds), videos in LIS (Italian Sign Language) and ISL (International Sign Language), as well as simplified text using a certified Easy Reading technique.
Alongside the development of the app, Willeasy carried out an in-depth analysis of the museum’s spaces and services to identify strengths and areas for improvement in terms of accessibility. This work has made it possible to define a series of measures and actions designed to make the visit increasingly straightforward, welcoming and independent for everyone.
Technical Committee
During the first year of the project, a Technical Committee was set up, comprising people with specific needs — including motor, sensory, cognitive and intellectual disabilities — and professionals in the sector, who validate every step taken towards the project’s implementation. This ensures that all solutions focus on the individual with specific needs, rather than solely on cutting-edge technology. The Technical Committee represents the true innovation of the project because, by starting with people’s needs, it enables the provision of an app that is accessible to a wide audience, guaranteeing full and independent use for everyone.
Audits and ongoing consultancy
In parallel with the development of the app, Willeasy carried out an accessibility audit of the museum, assessing physical accessibility, signage and digital content. The project, supported by a mapping exercise using proprietary technology, led to the production of a diagnostic report setting out priorities for action and quick fixes to improve overall accessibility.
