Four exhibitions to mark Pordenone’s journey towards becoming the Italian Capital of Culture 2027: Robert Doisneau, Olivia Arthur, Seiichi Furuya and Stefanie Moshammer are the international names taking centre stage in Pordenone’s upcoming photography season, scheduled to run from November 2025 to April 2026, which will comprise a series of exhibitions spread across the Galleria Harry Bertoia, the Museo Civico d'Arte and the new Mercati Culturali Pordenone.
The “Sul Leggere” project – promoted by Pordenone City Council and produced by Suazes – is one of the flagship projects of the “Pordenone 2027. A City that Surprises” programme, which began at the end of 2024 with exhibitions dedicated to Bruno Barbey and Italo Zannier on the theme of “Looking” and continued with the exhibition “Inge Morath. My Stories’, which runs until 16 November.
‘The outstanding season of photography that is transforming Pordenone – and Galleria Bertoia in particular – into a leading centre for international fine art photography continues,’ says Alberto Parigi, Councillor for Culture. ‘It is important to emphasise that this is a multi-year project, included in the bid dossier, a long-term commitment bearing the ‘Verso Pordenone 2027’ brand.’
The first major exhibition will be dedicated to Robert Doisneau (1912–1994), a master of French photography and the photographer behind the iconic black-and-white shot of the Parisian kiss (Le Baiser de l’hôtel de ville). Over a hundred photographs will be on display at Galleria Bertoia, tracing his immense career through the poetic, human and often ironic style that immortalised the streets, cafés and working-class neighbourhoods of the City of Light. The exhibition will be organised in collaboration with the Atelier Doisneau in Paris and Fondazione Artea, and curated by Gabriel and Chantal Bauret.
At the same time, from 22 November, a project by Olivia Arthur (1980) – a British photographer, member of Magnum Photos and winner of the Inge Morath Prize in 2007 – will make its debut. Arthur will present a documentary project in Pordenone that stands out for its intimate and humanist approach, with a particular focus on female identity and the margins of society.
Finally, from February to April, the Museo Civico d'Arte e dei Mercati Culturali Pordenone will host an exhibition of work by the Austrian photographer Stefanie Moshammer (1988), which blends personal experience and social observation, gender roles, memory and the environment.
